How Well Does Extension Color Hold Up? A Real 9-Week Check

How Well Does Extension Color Hold Up? A Real 9-Week Check

Video by Megan Anton, hair extension stylist.

One of the questions hair extension stylist Megan Anton hears most about Destination Hair Extensions is how the color holds up. In this video she answers with two real examples: a brunette client back after 9 weeks, and her own blonde extensions.

The Brunette Example: 9 Weeks of Wear, No Refresh Needed

Megan usually custom colors every weft before it goes in. For this client, the shades she ordered matched so closely that she did not custom color anything. She took the wefts out of the packages, washed them and installed them.

What you see in the video is not the first install. It is the client coming back for her first maintenance appointment, 9 weeks later. The wefts held their color so well that Megan did not need to refresh them.

The Blonde Example: Megan’s Own Extensions at 13 Weeks

For anyone wondering whether brunette simply holds up better, Megan uses her own hair. Her extensions went in about 13 weeks before her reinstall, and she did not custom color them either, because the colors she ordered matched her hair. At her reinstall they still looked great. The only thing she did was a quick purple shampoo, and she says that was the first time in 13 weeks.

How to Check Color Longevity at a Maintenance Appointment

  1. Photograph the install. A day-one photo is what you compare against at the move-up.
  2. Compare in the same light. Look at the wefts against the client’s root and mid-lengths, the way Megan does on camera.
  3. Decide whether to refresh. If the tone still matches, there is nothing to correct. Megan did not refresh this client’s wefts.
  4. Note what you did at home. For blonde, Megan’s only upkeep was one quick purple shampoo.

Why a Close Shade Match Saves Time

In both examples, Megan ordered shades that matched, so she skipped custom coloring at the first install. Getting the match right at ordering is what removes that step. See how she does it with the color ring, or how she blended a client who is part gray, part blonde.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long did the client wear her wefts before maintenance?

9 weeks. She came back for her first maintenance appointment and the wefts had held their color.

Did Megan custom color the client’s wefts?

No. The shades matched, so she took them out of the packages, washed them and installed them.

Does blonde hold up as well as brunette?

In Megan’s own blonde extensions, worn about 13 weeks, the color still looked great at her reinstall. Her only upkeep was one quick purple shampoo.
